I worked in Corporate America for nearly 10 years. While the experiences and relationships I gained were wonderful, being an entrepreneur and small business owner takes the cake! Are you thinking about becoming an entrepreneur? What are you waiting for?
Getting Over The Uncertainty
One of the appeals of working for someone else at an established business is the (slight) certainty. With two kids and a husband transitioning out of the military, trust me, I get the need for some certainty, especially in your paycheck. Becoming an entrepreneur does mean that you’ll have uncertainty in a lot of things. BUT, it’s only temporary and it’s contingent upon you.
You have everything you need to be successful as an entrepreneur right at your fingertips!
How To Get Started
Do you need money to fund your business or get your idea off the ground? If your business or mission has any hint of philanthropy, think about starting a Kickstarter campaign! As military spouses, we have a compelling story to share and you can use that to your advantage. Or, go the traditional route and get a small business loan through the SBA.
Not sure what kind of licenses you need for your state? It’s relatively simple for most industries. However, if you’re selling food, firearms, healthcare products, or anything monitored by the government, be prepared for an extra license or two. The SBA has curated links for each state so be sure to check out the requirements for your state.
Another question you’ll need to answer is what kind of entity you want to become? While most people will tell you to talk to a lawyer, we recommend starting with a small business accountant. They will be able to help you pick the right structure so you can make the most cash money.
How To Generate Traffic
Chances are you’re on Facebook or Instagram pretty consistently for personal reasons. While there are some subtle differences between social media for personal and business reasons, the basics are the same. Take your favorite social media platform and share links to your website, ask people questions, share your business story! Before you know it, you’ll have generated interest in your business without spending any money. Still need some social media fuel? How To Get Paid
Almost everyone knows what Paypal is. And we’ve all, at one point or another, used those cool white swiveling squares to pay for something. Paypal and Square are popular enough that most of your future clients have probably already used them to pay for something. And, whether you are selling online or in person, they are extremely easy-to-use payment processors.
Is That Really All It Takes?
One of the biggest hurdles to entrepreneurship is the intimidation and elusiveness of success. It seems too far-fetched and unattainable. Breaking it down into easily-achievable steps takes away that trepidation and encourages you to picture yourself becoming an entrepreneur. Of course there is a lot more to running a successful small business and we don’t deduce success as an entrepreneur to these 3 simple steps. But, saying to yourself “I can totally do that!” is the first step to becoming a successful business owner. Plus, there are so many resources (including yours truly) that can help you every step of the way in starting a business!
